Chatham UMC has been in ministry on the corner of Route 4 and Chestnut Street for 170 years. Our congregation was founded before Abraham Lincoln was elected to his first public office and before the beginning of the Civil War. In the midst of great cultural upheaval and rhetoric about church decline, this is the kind of perspective that gives us hope.
When we look back at our long history what we see is the faithfulness of God and the faithfulness of a congregation. What we see is a committment to love God and love our neighbors and to do so - no matter what is happening in the world.
Looking back, we are grateful for all that has been. Looking ahead, we are hopeful for all that will be. We can enjoy this kind of hope, becuase our trust is not in ourselves. Our trust is in Jesus and our desire and great longing is to be the church Jesus needs us to be right here and right now in the heart of our community.
Here are a few photos from our recent anniversary celebration. We celebrated with guest preachers, fellowshp meals, recognized people that have been members of our congregation for 50 plus years and received a special offering for Chaddock Children's Home.
We welcomed Rev. Keith Anderson (former pastor), Rev. Bradley Watkins (our District Superintendent) and the Rev. Kent Ingram (a United Methodist pastor that grew up at Chatham UMC).
We raised over $2,600 for Chaddock Children's Home surpassing our goal of $1,700.
We continue to celebrate all that God has done and will do in, for and through us!
For ten years now, Chatham UMC has been giving away school supplies to any Chatham area student in need. The need has steadily grown over the years but so has our response. This past August we served more students than we ever thought we would be able to serve - over 300 students (and over 150 families). This required us to stretch more than we have ever stretched, but God provides. We were able to raise the additional funds needed to purchase the supplies. Enough back packs were donated that every student that needed one received one! We even had more than enough volunteers to organize, pack and distribute the supplies.
We care deeply that every student in Chatham have all the tools necessary to be successful in school. Our prayers and love are with all of our area students during this 2023/2024 school year. We love our Chatham community!
Thank you for your generosity! Thank you for volunteering!
Thank you!
In July of 2022 our leadership teams made the decision to pay off the remaining balance of our church renovation debt. It was roughly a 1.1 million dollar project that we called REACH. Well, we are delighted to report that we have finally REACHed the finish line. All debt has been eliminated.
On Sunday, September 25th, the congregation gathered to remember the story and to celebrate. We remembered how members of this congregation took a giant leap of faith and now years into the future we celebrate all that has been accomplished.
Here is how we celebrated. We began with a special worship service at 9 am, a time of fellowship with special treats at 10 am and concluded the morning with a pack event for Titan Fuel. You can check out some of photos of the day's events below!
